Saqib Bhatti, MP for Meriden, has written to the Environment Agency after fire crews from Solihull and Coventry were called due to a fire at the A & A Recycling Centre on Cornets End Lane in Meriden on Thursday 28th July.
Twelve fire engines arrived at the scene after being alerted at 10:30pm. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the emergency services remained at the recycling plant overnight to monitor the situation.
On Monday 1st August, Saqib Bhatti met with the Meriden Parish Council to unearth underlying reasons as to why the fire broke out and to discuss action to be taken moving forward.
Commenting on the fire:
“I am deeply concerned that this is the second time a fire has broken out at the Meriden recycling plant. I have written to the Environment Agency to ask them to provide an update as to what action they are proposing to take, to ensure no such fire re-occurs.
“This is the second major fire at this site in the space of eight years. After the first fire, Meriden Parish Council were assured that the site was “low risk”, and the Environment Agency were going to review their Fire Risk Assessment and discuss any possible improvements or additional safety measures. Evidently, the Environment Agency have not put the necessary preventative measures in place.
“I have contacted local residents updating them about the status of the recycling plant and also asking them to come forward with any information they may have about the site.
“I will continue to work with both the Parish Council and the Environmental Agency to ensure there will not be another fire at the site.”
