Saqib Bhatti, Member of Parliament for Meriden, asked the Prime Minister about the measures in place to foster the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence whilst ensuring that society is protected by appropriate regulations. He drew attention to the upcoming AI safety summit in November, and the importance of balancing the huge advances possible using AI, with the associated risks that it also poses.
AI presents huge possibilities for advancement in science, technology, and financial services, and yet vigilance is needed to ensure that it is used responsibly and in the interests of the public.
The Prime Minister concurred with Saqib’s assessment of the need for guardrails and expressed his intention to address the issue with international partners at the AI safety summit.
Commenting on the future of AI, Saqib said:
“Week in week out, I meet businesses in the Meriden constituency that are being transformed by AI, especially in the life sciences, automotive and tech sectors. These innovations should be celebrated but we must also make sure that we are taking a proportionate and reasoned approach in making sure the appropriate guardrails are in place to regulate the use of AI.”
Responding to Saqib’s question, the Prime Minister said:
“My honourable friend is right to highlight the incredible power of AI to transform not just businesses and our productivity but also public services in areas like health and education. But we do need guardrails to allow us to make the most of the opportunities of AI and to address risks.”
“Our regulatory approach sets out a responsible and proportionate approach to AI that balances risk and innovation, and I look forward to working with international partners about how we do this at a global level at our upcoming AI safety summit.”
